Week 1: G-d, Torah and the Jews
Hasn't belief in G-d caused as much evil as good? If G-d knows best, what's the point of prayer? How can we have "free choice" if G-d already knows what we're going to do? Do (Normal) Jews believe in prophesy? Are we supposed to be afraid of G-d? This class will discuss some of the most fundamental questions (and answers!) in Jewish tradition.
Week 2: Shabbat – An Island in Time
Tranquility. Awareness. Jewish identity. Family. Truly restful sleep and the best food on earth...We're told that no such thing exists, but Shabbat may well be the panacea to modern life. Imagine: a day on which the world stands still. Imagine: a time when the search for your spiritual center ceases -- because you now are at your spiritual center. The question is, why so many restrictions? All that "don't do this" and "don't do that" -- sounds more like a prison than a day of rest! Also: the secret
to Jewish spirituality.
Week 3: Kosher – A Diet for the Soul What is Kosher?
What is the source of the kosher laws? What are the reasons for the kosher laws?? Also: The spiritual significance of shechitah; the laws of kashrut applied to the beast, bird and fish within the soul of man.
Week 4: Holiday and Holy Day – The Jewish Calendar
Take a journey through the Jewish calendar and learn more about the significance of the customs and practices of Jewish Holidays. The Jewish year, with its holidays and fast days, is a cycle of recurring spiritual influences, with each year bringing a new dimension to the cycle. This class will highlight the spiritual message of the holidays, showing the connection between the historical significance of these days and their eternal relevance to Jewish life.
Week 5: Prayer – Is Anyone Listening?
A recent survey suggests that 86% of North American’s say they believe in G-d, and 9 out of 10 claim to engage in prayer regularly. The Torah refers to prayer as "the service of the heart," an act suffused with love and reverence. If prayer is from the heart, why the need for a prayer book? The Hebrew word Tefilah (תפילה) is generally translated into English as the word "prayer." But this is not an accurate translation… Join us and find out the true meaning of prayer.
Week 6: From Baby Naming to Chupah –The Jewish Lifecycles
Brit Milah, upsherin, Bar and Bat Mitzvah, marriage, aging and retirement, bereavement and mourning... from birth to death in Jewish tradition and practice.
